The Contents of that Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. Spoiler Warning: This discussion details significant events for the concluding episodes.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase most likely held vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the case could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict that awaits.
