Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
